Last Update a year ago
Starting August 1, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has implemented new regulations regarding the entry of dogs into the United States. These regulations aim to ensure the health and safety of all pets and people. Please review the updated requirements to ensure a smooth and compliant entry process for your canine companions.
Age Requirement:
- Dogs must be at least 6 months old at the time of entry or return to the United States.
Microchip Requirement:
- All dogs must have an International Organization for Standardization (ISO)-compatible microchip implanted. This microchip must be implanted before any required rabies vaccination.
- The microchip number must be documented on all required forms and veterinary records.
Health and Safety:
- Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival. If a dog shows signs of illness, further veterinary examination and testing may be required at the importer's expense to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
CDC Dog Import Form:
- Importers must complete and submit the CDC Dog Import Form online, ideally 2-10 days before arrival. This form requires a clear photograph of the dog showing its face and body.
- Any changes to the form before arrival must be resubmitted with the correct information.
Documentation Based on Rabies Vaccination and Country of Origin:
- For dogs with a current rabies vaccination administered in the USA:
- Dogs that have been in high-risk countries within the past 6 months must have a Certification of U.S.-Issued Rabies Vaccine form endorsed by the USDA before departure.
- During the transition period, a USDA-endorsed export health certificate may be used if it documents the dog’s age, microchip number, and valid rabies vaccination.
- For dogs that have been in rabies-free or low-risk countries:
- Appropriate documentation of the dog’s health, age, and vaccination status is required.
- For dogs with a current rabies vaccination administered in the USA:
Additional Requirements for High-Risk Rabies Countries:
- Dogs coming from high-risk rabies countries without U.S.-issued rabies vaccine documentation must meet specific additional requirements, including rabies serology titer testing and possibly a 28-day quarantine.
Failure to meet these requirements will result in the denial of entry for the dog and its return to the country of departure at the importer's expense.
